If while reading the plot synopsis of 'Saguni' you have a sense of déjà vu, you're banging on. Actually, the film is a rehash of Dharani's 'Dhool,' which was about a villager (played by Vikram) coming to town to solve the problem of his village just to earn a minister's wrath. But while 'Dhool' has become a blockbuster entertainer despite being over-the-top, 'Saguni' is an unbelievable movie that squandered more than it saves.
Yet the lightness of contact that it has during its first half is what keeps it from being simply trite. The initial scenes when Kamal gets familiar with Rajini aka Appadurai (Santhanam), an auto driver, and tells his story are, in reality, compellingly orchestrated to an extent (with a needless cameo tossed in by a leading heroine), and you too engage in the ambling plot, forgiving the mediocre songs — and even the heroine — that seem to have been put into the film just for the sake of it.
But as it enters political grounds, the traction of the film falters when it actually ought to have picked up steam, and the result is a storyline that mingles without anything new to offer.
For a long time, we forget the real objective behind Kamal 's city visit as he encourages Ramani Aachi (Radhika), a local idli seller-turned-loan mammoth, to challenge the local body polls (he even manages to make her the city's mayor). The producer then forsakes the role and introduces a new one, the opposition party leader Perumal (Kota Srinivasa Rao), and spends the rest of the time concentrating on Kamal's attempts to make Perumal the chief minister.
The film has been marketed as political humor all along, but the few references it has to bring to contemporary affairs are pure pokes than punches and the result is to see a parody without the bite. Even the hero-villain game of political another-upmanship sounds mild. Wherever we should have had an enjoyable war of humor, we just get a one-sided game as director Shankar Dayal keeps Boopathi a passive observer.
Yet the cruel CM Bhupathi does not leave it lying down. He hits back in unpredictable and serious forms against Kamal. His romance with maradalu Sridevi (Pranitha) lies somewhere amongst all this. Can Kamal survive those assaults? Can he save his own property? That forms the rest of the plot.
Kamal achieves his wins relatively comfortably, but hardly encounters any tough challenges. Yeah, he gets arrested on a bogus drug charge and sent to prison, but while we consider this to be a blow to his scheme, the director confuses us by treating him for his leadership as a pure walk in the park. And the laid-back depiction of Karthi also extracts the gravity from the plot.
Comparing this with how his enemies almost beat the character of Vikram in 'Dhool' to death and then stages a bold resurrection. Which one looks admirable, now? Although the Mahabarata's Saguni is known to be the greatest gambler, this movie may be called the great ambler because it sails from one plot point to another without really making any meaningful impact or caring for its characters. Think of it as a fake model of a high-end cell phone you are having in Burma Bazaar — it has all the apps, except that they aren't as successful as they should.
