If there is one thing Tharun Bhascker clearly hates, those are clichés. If you've seen his first film, Pelli Choopulu, or heard him talk in interviews, you have to be ready to expect from a Tharun Bhascker film the unexpected. The director brilliantly tries to bring a refreshing and hilarious film to a plot that has so much potential for clichés that it will stay with you long after you leave the theatre.
The movie hits fifth gear right from the get-go, why mess with the niceties when you're ready to go full throttle? The director is playing with the camera and shots slow motion to get a dramatic opening. And instead, the boys' group is added. In Jubilee hills, Karthik (Sai Sushanth Reddy) runs a high-end cocktail bar.
He is ambitious and enjoys a high flying life, so much so that he decides to marry the daughter of his employer so that he can get his own club and live in America. The wedding is a business deal for him, why waste time in love when you are able to own a club and get settled, right? Ironically, Karthik seems to be the most sincere guy of them all, for a guy with the thought-process. Well, when you come across his friends, Kaushik (Abhinav Gomatam), who dubs for animated films but secretly wants to be an actor, there's not much to compare with.
His father is always yelling at him, and his French-learning kid brother who looks down at him sitting at home and playing video games is teasing him. His criminal partner is Upendra aka Uppi (Venkatesh Kakumanu), a wedding photographer who can edit pimples, and someone who enjoys drinking except on Tuesdays. Every gang needs a rowdy, and these boys find one in Vivek (Vishwak Sen), who acts outright aggressively but is in fact a frightened and sensitive guy who always wears shades to mask his insecurities.
These four men share horrific past experiences, heartbreaks, Booz nights, and, of course, a trip to Goa. They also put together short movies but never show them to anyone. There is all you would expect from a best friend flick, and yet it's incredibly unique.
The film is conversational, and nothing feels hurried, and Vivek Sagar 's wonderful music is well complemented. Ee Nagaraaniki Emaindi 's beauty rests in its spontaneity. The discussions are great. There is no over-the-top love, heartbreak, or humor confession. It simply indicates Tharun's contempt for the clichés.
For when Vivek and Shilpa fall for one another and you expect a proposal kind of 'I love you,' Vivek starts talking to her in broken Hindi instead. Subtle signals are sent through the movie too. For eg, the group also takes a dig at Karthik for claiming that he lives in Jubilee Hills while he actually stays behind Jubilee Hills and is originally from West Maredpally – the message specifically targets a segment of young people who are desperately trying to scale an imagined social ladder.
At times the film gets a little slow. Especially in the first half, the director overdoes the slow motion. Yet the comedy is so strong that it compensates for all of the movie's slight shortcomings. Abhinav Gomatam gets the most meat part and he delivers a child. His delivery dialog and comic timing are flawless and will leave you in splits throughout the movie. The rest put in sincere performances too. The girls, Anisha Ambrose and Simran Chaudhary don't have much to do, but neither are they inconsistent with the film, as is so often the case in formulaic films.
Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi, meaning "What happened to this city?" (in English) by Tharun Bhascker has undoubtedly scripted a humorous tale once again and his dialogs are terrific. Do yourself a favor this weekend and watch this movie, and laugh your heart out.
